Surfers on the West Coast

The west coast of the Algarve is very different from the south. Big waves crash in from the Atlantic Ocean drawing surfers in their hundreds from all over the world. Their single minded excitement is evident as they prepare themselves for the thrill ahead.

I painted this piece from photographs I took of a recent visit. Each of the boys seemed dwarfed by the size of their battered and waxed boards.

I tried to capture a snapshot of a quick moment before each of them ran off into the waves.
