Monchique Donkey Steps
This was one of the first paintings I did during the lockdowns of 2020.
Obviously I couldn’t stand on the street to paint as I’d have liked, so I had to resort to taking photographs from the safety of my car that I could work up in my home studio.
Monchique, my local town, is normally fairly busy with tourists at all times of the year so it was surreal to experience it with just this lone figure clad in his mask.
I loved the perspective of this scene with the old shallow steps that in days gone by helped the donkeys carry their loads up the slippery cobbled streets.
